THE TALE OF THE WATER

“HIGH CURRENT”

From the balcony of his house, Fortunato a sad and lonely man saw a beautiful woman calling him from the other side of the river. Fortunato went to meet her but when he tried to cross the river, the water started moving really wired and the current went strong making him stop and return to the shore.

The first day was a like a nightmare for him because hi tried many times to cross the river but he failed. Fortunato was an unappealing short, middle age man and no woman had ever showed any interest in him, until now. He refused the idea of being called the lonely man of the family.

The next day he saw again the woman on the other side of the river, smiling at him and inviting him to her place, he tried to cross many times, but the water didn’t let him pass. So, he sat at the shore very sad thinking about the reason of his bad luck.  That night he thought on drawing himself to end his suffering. But he didn’t do it.

Three days pass and he continued watching the woman from the other side, he was already in love with her, he had dreamed about her three consecutive nights and his only thoughts were about her.

Fortunato spent most of his days imagining kissing her, touching her skin, her lips, her hair…

Fourth day pass and the woman started calling him louder, this time his voice sounded like she was desperate, like the voice of someone asking for help, she wanted to get out of there desperately, but he couldn’t do anything for her, he couldn’t cross the river.

That same afternoon Fortunato prepared a good cup of coffee and sat down on his balcony to watch the women from the distance, suddenly that sunny and beautiful afternoon turned into a cloudy, rainy and foggy day. While sipping his hot cup of coffee he saw the woman making movements with her hands trying to control the water, then the woman crossed the river and appeared at the balcony next to him, took the cup of coffee from him, smelled its strong aroma and with a sweet smile she drank the coffee and then kissed him.

He didn’t care she was witch!

The books of Carlos Flaminio Rivera give account of a silent work, of a submersion in writing. Rivera proposes a demanding reader, who sinks into its waters. His stories are loaded with images that oscillate between prosa and poetry and have a fair lyricism; that's why you have to be attentive to the depth of your short phrasing. Their stories show a deep unease about that residue of utopias that man leaves and his reasons.
