The coffee fruits!
and the little blue frog.
Coffee pickers or Chapoleras are women with agile hands, festive temperament, great tenacity and willingness for daily chores. They always carry a song on their lips and a smile for their co-workers.
These Chapoleras hang from their waist the fine basket where they collect ripe coffee fruits, with their gently hands rip them out of the bushes and give to these coffee fruits the care they deserve, since they are used to make the world’s favorite drink.
But these women are not the only vital workforce of the harvest season, the whole family is, they celebrate together every time a coffee plant blooms.
while in the middle of the harvest season, two of these women (chapoleras) sat in the afternoon to rest under the foliage of a big coffee tree. It was a rainy day and the frogs accompanied with their joy the sound of the water running under the ground.
The youngest woman, around 20 years old, had been complaining about her work the whole day, the oldest, who had been by her side collecting coffee fruits on that day and tired of listening to her complains, decided to tell her the story of the little blue frog.
She began to tell the story:
>> The little blue frog lives in a bush as big and beautiful as this one that protects us from the rain. He speaks and only the chapoleras hear his voice.
The girl initially paid no attention to her companion’s tale and continued with her boredom and bad face, but in those moments, something jumped out of the branches of the tree where they were resting: a drop of water from the rain came to hit her face, awakening her. So, she started to paid attention.
The oldest girl continued with the story…
>> What I’m going to tell, happened on these very lands not long ago:
A widow chapolera with two married children, met the little blue frog. He was in a beautiful coffee tree that had red and green coffee fruits and a dry one that was nowhere to be seen.
The little frog was lamenting the loss of that dry coffee fruit that meant a lot to him.
The widow was under that beautiful tree sheltering from the rain, and from where she was, she could see the dry coffee fruit that the frog was searching for, it was hanging from a branch that reached almost the ground. “here is Mr. frog” — said the widow without showing any mistrust and wanting to help the little animal that sounded desperate.
The little blue frog jumped up, presenting itself before her eyes. Its skin was like glass and every time he spoke it seemed like it was going to break.

The widow showed him the dry coffee fruit, immediately he took it and cut it open to reveal a big yellow diamond was hiding inside the dry shell. “This is my greatest treasure” — said the frog, “but I also have an emerald” — and he pointed out a green coffee fruit of the many that were on the branches. “And a great ruby” — he said, showing with his translucent lips a ripe and very large coffee fruit. >>
The youngest girl was already searching with her gaze for the flashes of the coffee fruits described in her friend’s story. The oldest rushed the story to get her attention back.
>> “I have to finish my job little friend” — said the widow. – “the rain has stopped, and I have to go. I’m so sorry for leaving you alone but I must go”, The frog stopped this nice and hardworking woman and said, “Friend, take this branch, it has three coffee fruits with emerald, three with big rubies, and three dry ones that hold the most beautiful yellow diamonds. When you harvest it, you’ll feel the fruits fall into the basket, keep them without telling anyone. And remember, you will use them only when you have an extreme need or emergency. But you must use them without ambition.”

The woman finished her day of work keeping the nine coffee fruits given to her by the little blue frog wrapped in the scarf she used to protect her face from the sun, hidden under her dress.
And when this woman needed to buy a farm and her saving weren’t enough, she took the coffee fruits, opened them up, sold the gems and completed the money she needed…
… Come on girl, the rain stopped and the gems hanging from the coffee trees are waiting for us to pick them up.”
