The Greedy Landlord And the coffee plantations.

The family arrived at the region looking for work at the coffee plantations, it was harvest and they were hiring many coffee pickers and general labor. The trip was long and exhausting, they used all the money they had to get there.

That night after they arrived at the plantations, they didn’t have a place to stay, and no money left to pay for a room. They went to one of the farms to ask for food and stay, in exchange for work at the coffee plantations and at the house. They were a family of 5 (Father, Mother, and three beautiful daughters), the man who received then was the Owner of the house and after seeing the beauty of the girls, he went from attentive to flattering.

Did you know that… The Colombian coffee growing axis was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list on 2011 as the “coffee cultural landscape”.
The states located within this region are: Tolima, Caldas, Quindio, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca. The region has developed major theme parks and the Museum of Culture Coffee, where tourists enjoy dance performances and traditional music, panoramic views from cable car with its lush landscape, and various rides.

He offered the girls a room that was next to his and very far from the one he gave their parents to spend the night, but they refused, and the mas stopped being attentive to the family.

The next morning the father went to him asking where he was going to work and the man with bad attitude asked “-why are you people still here, I told you to leave last night.”

-“Apologies sir, we didn’t mean to bother you, we will leave now.” responded dad.

-“not so fast, I need the payment  for the room and the food I gave to you and your family.” Said the owner of the house.

– “I don’t have any money left, I can pay you with work, just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.”

At that moment one of the girls enters the room and asked the owner of the house how much money they owed him for the food, and the man asked for an exorbitant amount of money.

Apparently, the man was known at the town for taking advantage of needy families.

After the man said how much they owed him, the girl checked her pocket and gave him 5 gold coins as payment for the food, and then gave him 1 more coin as thank you for helping them when they need it. The man was in shock, speechless he could not believe was he was seeing. Without letting him get out of his astonishment, another of the girls enters the room and asked him how much they owed him for the room.

The greedy man still astonished, exaggerated even more and overcharged them, the girl opened her backpack and paid him with a gold ingot, and gave him an extra small one as gratitude for the service he gave them.

The third girl enters the room and gave him a bucket full of water thanking him for everything, he didn’t understand the meaning of it at that moment, he looked at it with contempt, threw it on the floor, spilling all the water, then he kicked it, breaking it.

Happy with what he had gotten from them, and done to them, he asked the family to leave his farm and never come back.

They left!

The greedy Landlord

That night – cradling his ambition and imagining all that his newfound wealth would allow him to do – he couldn’t sleep. He was happy. He couldn’t stop rubbing his gold, kissing it and laughing.

Suddenly the gold started melting and turned into fire, it started spreading through the house and slowly burning everything on its way. The man quickly went to the kitchen looking for a container or bucket to put water in it, he found the broken bucket the girl gave him earlier with water, and next to it saw three more broken ones, then he continued searching and every container he found on the house had the same hole he made to the bucket when he kicked it with anger.

The books of Carlos Flaminio Rivera give account of a silent work, of a submersion in writing. Rivera proposes a demanding reader, who sinks into its waters. His stories are loaded with images that oscillate between prosa and poetry and have a fair lyricism; that's why you have to be attentive to the depth of your short phrasing. Their stories show a deep unease about that residue of utopias that man leaves and his reasons.
