Coffee at the Tavern

“Cerrero Coffee”

-“The footprints that you see on the floor are from my dear mule. I made her horseshoes with silver and gold because she deserves it”.

Those were the words of the gobbling while he talks about his mule.

-” My mule does everything I ask, I’m the only one who rides her and everything I put on her back she turns into gold, ” and he laughed showing his shiny teeth.

He was at the tavern drinking Guarapo (alcoholic beverage made of fermented sugar cane juice) with the muleteers and talking to them while they were sleeping. Goblins don’t usually appear to people, but this one was there because the muleteers were passed out drunk.

The goblin was drinking only Guarapo while watching the drunk men pass out, he enjoyed it! The muleteers were drinking run, Guarapo, and beer, and the owner of the tavern was drinking with them too, he passed out on top of the wooden counter.

The Goblin continued talking about his mule to the sleeping me on the tavern, he would walk on top of their table talking and laughing, he knew they weren’t listening.

When he jumped onto the table next to the counter, someone said : -“ My mule does everything I ask… Zzz, zzz. “

He turned back and saw one of the drunk men sleep talking. Then another one woke up, still very drunk and tried to get the half empty bottle of run from the owner arms while he was sleeping, but the man protected the bottle with his body so no one would take it. The drunk man fell off to the floor taking with him the 35kg bags that the muleteers were carrying when they arrived at the tavern.

Those big bags were filled with coffee beans, one of them broke and the coffee inside fell to the floor.

The noise of the coffee beans falling to the floor alert the wife of the owner, she was at the kitchen, and she came out with a cup of cerrero coffee in her hands, the aroma was fresh and delicious, it made the goblin get off the table, then he asked:

– ” What is that? “

The woman was a witch, so she knew the goblin! She responded:

– ” This is coffee and that is coffee too,” pointing her finger to the coffee bags of the drunk muleteers.

The goblin smelled his drink to compare aromas, but they were different, obviously! the witch gave him a taste of her coffee.

– ” What is this? ” he asked again

– ” Something better than the Guarapo you’re drinking, ” she said.

He tasted it again

With the first sip of coffee his eyes shinned like the stars, with the second one his mind went sharp and with the third sip he started dancing, with the… the witch snatched the cup of coffee from him.

– ” Make your own coffee! why you think I serve run and Guarapo to these drunkards? no one touch my coffee, ” she said.

” Did you know that Cerrero coffee is the type of coffee prepared by People who live in the Andean mountains, this coffee is black, short, without sugar and mixed with alcohol. “

The goblin happy for the coffee he tasted, went outside and pulled his mule’s tail so she wouldn’t turn into gold what he was about to put on her back, and he left the tavern singing of happiness with the coffee bags he took from the place.

The next morning when the muleteers were leaving the tavern, they saw horseshoes shaped footprints on the ground, and inside of them a bunch of tiny gold nails, they took and sold them to compensate for the missing bag of coffee that mysteriously disappeared overnight while they were sleeping drunk.

The books of Carlos Flaminio Rivera give account of a silent work, of a submersion in writing. Rivera proposes a demanding reader, who sinks into its waters. His stories are loaded with images that oscillate between prosa and poetry and have a fair lyricism; that's why you have to be attentive to the depth of your short phrasing. Their stories show a deep unease about that residue of utopias that man leaves and his reasons.
